Final Analysis:

Relationships: Lily & June
Zack

At the beginning of the story when Lily and Rosaleen first get to the Pink house June did not care for Lily as seen when June was talking to August and they said “Let’s see if we can help her, August said as June disappeared from my line of sight. We owe her that. I don’t see that we owe her anything, June said. A door slammed. August flipped off the light and let out a sigh that floated into the darkness” (Kidd 87). This showed that June did not care for Lily and she thought that they should not let Lily and Rosaleen stay in their house. As the story went on Lily and June bonded some more and June liked Lily a little bit more, but she still wasn’t comfortable with Lily in her house like when they were playing in the sprinkler and June didn’t want to laugh, but she ended up doing it anyway and doing it with Lily, “I saw the softening come around June’s eyes, how she was trying not to laugh, but it was like the Dutch boy pulling his finger out of the dike-the minute she softened her eyes, the whole thing collapsed. She let go and sprawled back on the grass in the convulsions of laughter. I plopped down next to her and laughed, too. We could not stop” (Kidd 169). It showed that June didn’t completely like Lily, but she had feelings for her and showed that they started to become friends. Later when May died Lily was there for the whole thing and she shared it with them like she was part of the family, “We’ve lost her, August said. I started to shiver. I could hear my teeth in my mouth, crashing against each other” (Kidd 193). This shows how Lily cares for May, and she took her death like she was apart of their family. Towards the end it showed that Lily and June loved each other because there were no harsh words expressed towards each other and they treated each other like they were sisters. The reason for that is because of May’s death. I believe that it made the whole family come closer. It also showed June that Lily really did care, and that is what made their relationship solidify. At the beginning June and Lily did not care for one an other, but as the book went on, and the more their relationship grew and by the end of the story they really did love, and care for each other.

Character: Lily
In the beginning of “The Secret Life of Bees”, Lily describes to the reader that she has killed her mother, and that she is living with T. Ray, her father. She describes how much she hates her father.
“I guess they must have flown out of that cuckoo clock you call a brain. You wake me up again, Lily, and I’ll get out the Martha Whites, you hear me?” T. Ray said.
Martha Whites were a form of punishment only T. Ray could have dreamed up. I shut my mouth instantly (5).
This passage from the book shows T. Ray’s cruelty towards Lily. All she wanted to do was show him the bees inside her room, but they flew away before he could see them, and T. Ray got mad at her for that. T. Ray has always been mad at Lily, and he has always treated her badly. Lily has had to live her life without a mother, since she was four. She has never gotten the same treatment as other girls.
Later on in the book, Lily listens to T. Ray when he starts to talk about her mother. She is angered by what he says about her. “Your mother?” His face was bright red. “You think that god-damn woman gave a sh*t about you?” (39).
This quote shows how much T. Ray hated Lily and her mother. T. Ray lies to Lily on purpose, just to make her be quiet. He doesn’t want her going around saying how much she misses her mother. Even after, when Lily says that her mother loved her, T. Ray still laughs at her. He can never take her seriously and he doesn’t want her there. That is why he punishes her for little things.
Then Lily ends up meeting the Boatwright Sisters. At first, all the daughters are questioning why a white girl is with them, but they accept it. Later on, Lily finds out that only one daughter is not ok with her being there. June is the only daughter that hates Lily because of the fact that she is white.
When June and August are talking in the pink house, August tries to reason with June and tell her that Lily deserves to stay with them, but June doesn’t listen. “Everything in time,” August said. “The last thing I want is to scare her off with a lot of questions. She’ll tell us when she’s ready. Let’s be patient.”
“But she’s white, August.” June said (87). Because of the fact that Lily is white, June doesn’t accept her. June feels that only black people are allowed to be there.
Throughout the book, Lily has gone from loosing her mother and being lonely, to being angry because she is stuck with T. Ray. She then meets the Boatwright sisters and she learns to be happy. She finally learns the truth about her mother, thanks to the Boatwright sisters.

Theme: Forgiveness
In The Secret Life of Bees, many themes are expressed throughout the novel, such as love, redemption, and hope. But I think the biggest theme in the book is forgiveness. June has to forgive herself for falling in love with someone who left her at the alter, and T.Ray has to forgive Deborah for leaving him. But the most important theme of forgiveness that goes on in TSLOB is Lily trying to forgive herself for killing her mother, as well as trying to forgive her mother for leaving her when she was young.
At the beginning of the book, Lily is fairly certain that she shot her mother, and it is reinforced when T.Ray says that “[your mother and I] were arguing….we didn’t see you at first. Then we turned around and you were standing there holding the gun. You’d picked it up off the floor. Then it just went off.” (Kidd 19). She built up her mother as an almost invincible figure, but unfortunately, August told her what she was really like. She was a normal person, someone who made mistakes and could be overwhelmed. When August told Lily that “No honey, [she didn’t bring you], she came by herself.” (Kidd 251) Lily in essence disowned her mom. She didn’t want anything to do with her. It wasn’t until August gave her some of her mothers things did she finally forgive her. When she saw that one of the things her mother held so dear was a picture of herself and her mother in a loving embrace, she realized that she really did love her. She immediately felt awful for shunning her mother from her thoughts and love, and silently asked her mother for forgiveness.
When she saw the picture, she thought that “May must’ve made it to heaven and explained to my mother about the sign I wanted. The one that would let me know I was loved.” (Kidd 276). She forgave her mother for leaving her, and in her mind received forgiveness from her mother.
