While she is looking into the long vast distance of this terrible world she realizes all the things gone wrong. Lily realizes that she has strong compassionate feelings for Zach but in the terrible world they live in that is not allowed. Blacks and whites can not have feelings for each other. It is counted as a crime. Lily is crying for Zach because she wants to have feelings for him she wants Zach but she can't have him because of segregation. However, he is also trying to prevent stereotyping that the only the blacks are successful at are sports. This stereotype deeply bothers Zack because he wants to be a lawyer like the other white men. However there is yet to be a black lawyer and this is why he encourages Lily to "imagine what's never been" (Kidd 121).
